What is a covenant?

A covenant is a promise by which we obligate ourselves to one another in such a way that the obligation of one party is not dependent on the faithfulness of the other (Gen. 15). This covenant includes a statement of faith, a commitment to Biblical truth, the commitments of the church to its members, and the commitments of covenant members to Disciples Church. Though the covenant does define the relationship between members and the local church, it is first and foremost a promise made to God as a commitment to his glory and his bride, the Church.

Statement of faith

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through Him all things were made.
For us and our salvation, He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; has ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life;
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.
We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired in the original manuscripts, written by humans under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

My commitment to Disciples Church as a covenant member:

 I covenant to immerse myself in God’s Word and to allow it to permeate all aspects of my life with its truth. (2 Tim. 3:16-17, Acts. 17:11).
 I will discipline myself to maintain a close relationship with the Lord Jesus. My relationship will be evident through my participation in communion, the church community, service, and a life that glorifies Jesus (Acts 2:42-47, Heb. 10:23-25).
 I will joyfully and sacrificially steward the resources God has given me, including my time,  by participating regularly in worship services and the life of the church community (Rom. 12:1-2, Eph. 5:15-18); my talents, by serving God’s Church and my neighbours with the gifts I have been given (Ex. 35:30-35, Eph. 4:11-16); and my treasure, through regular financial giving (Prov. 3:9-10; 2 Cor. 9:6-9).
 I covenant to submit to God through his Holy Spirit (Heb. 12:5-11). I commit to allow others to speak into my life and to speak into the lives of my brothers and sisters in a Godly and Biblical way. (Gal. 6:1-5, Ps. 141:5).
 I commit to resolve conflict where it arises with my fellow covenant members in a biblical manner that moves towards forgiveness and reconciliation (Matt. 18:15-17, Titus. 3:10-11).
 I commit to treat all of God’s children with respect and grace, holding to the tenants in essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity (John. 13:34-35, 1 John. 4:19-21).
 I agree, by God's grace, to walk in holiness as an act of worship to Jesus Christ, who has saved me from my sin that I could live a new life (2 Cor. 5:17). I will not have anything in my life that will interfere with my relationship with God and others or that will compromise my integrity (Rom. 8:12-13; Col. 3:5).  When I sin, I agree to confess my sins to Christian brothers or sisters and seek help from them and from God (James 5:16; 1 John 1:6-10).

Commitment of Disciples Church leadership to its covenant members:

 1. We covenant to study the Scriptures and follow the Spirit to lead, administer, and steward in a manner that is godly and God-honouring (Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:1-6).
 2. We covenant to care for you and seek your growth as a disciple of Christ, in part by equipping you for service (Eph. 4:11-13) and praying for you regularly, particularly when you are sick (James 5:14).
 3. We covenant to provide teaching and counsel from the whole of Scripture (2 Tim. 4:1-2).
 4. We covenant to be on guard against false teachers and false teaching (Acts 20:28-31, 1 Tim. 1:3-7).
 5. We covenant to exercise church discipline in a God-honouring manner when necessary (Matt. 18:15-20, Gal. 6:1).
 6. We covenant to set an example and join you in fulfilling the duties as church members (1 Cor. 11:1, 1 Tim. 4:12).

By saying and signing this covenant, you agree to uphold the covenant and enter into membership with Disciples Church for the current year. To affirm continued membership in this church, all members are required to say and sign a covenant agreement annually.
